Extract, Powder, Capsule or Gummy: What Actually Works

Format decides how much of the active compound you actually get. Most of the price difference between products is not the format.

Extract

Hot water or dual extraction concentrates the active compounds and breaks down chitin — the tough cell wall that otherwise makes much of the mushroom indigestible to humans. This is the form used in most clinical trials, and the only one where a beta-glucan percentage means much.

Dual extraction, using water and alcohol, captures both the water-soluble beta-glucans and the fat-soluble compounds including hericenones. It is the most complete form and usually the most expensive.

Powder

Ground whole mushroom, unextracted. Cheaper, and the chitin problem is real — a meaningful share passes through undigested. It is food rather than a supplement, which is fine if that is what you want.

Capsules

A delivery method, not a form. A capsule can contain extract or plain powder, and the capsule tells you nothing. Read what is inside it.

Gummies

The weakest format in practice. Physical space in a gummy is limited and much of it is sugar and binder, so doses are typically low. Good for compliance, poor for potency.

Tinctures

Liquid dual extracts. Absorb quickly, dose flexibly, taste strongly of alcohol and mushroom. Effective and unpleasant.

The short version: dual-extracted, fruiting body, with a stated beta-glucan percentage. Everything else is a compromise you should be making knowingly.

Questions about this

Frequently asked

Is extract better than powder?

For a supplemental effect, yes. Extraction concentrates the actives and breaks down chitin, which humans cannot digest well. Plain powder is closer to eating the mushroom — pleasant, but a much lower effective dose per gram.

What is dual extraction?

Extracting with both water and alcohol. Water pulls out beta-glucans, alcohol pulls out the fat-soluble compounds including hericenones. Doing only one captures only half.

Do lion's mane gummies work?

They contain much less than capsules or extracts — a gummy is mostly sugar and binder, leaving little room for active ingredient. They are good for remembering to take something and poor for taking enough.
